Chiropractic care for back pain is a well established, documented and researched form of treatment leading to reduced cost to patients and insurers, but we can do better! At Tacoma Chiropractic Center we have reduced cost by a even greater margin by simply implementing treatment strategies that make sense. Unfortunately, there has not been any consistent treatment protocols to address back pain which is why we can do better if we follow the treatment plan recommended by Tacoma Chiropractic Center. If you ask anyone who's had back pain you will get a lot of different answers as to what they did for treatment. Treatment recommendations are given based on the type of provider the patient sees and NOT by a recommended protocol. For example, when you go to the medical doctor for a bacterial infection the protocol is set and you will likely receive antibiotics. If you have back pain you might get medication for pain, spasm and inflammation. You might get a referral to physical therapy, acupuncture, massage, chiropractic or given advice to lose weight, do yoga or exercise more. The lack of consistency and protocols is confusing and frustrating to patients who are often left with finding their own treatment.
Most treatment recommendations are beneficial, however, they are often done in the wrong order leading to delayed responses, lingering and often recurring pain. Pain relief should NOT be the goal, returning to normal pain free functional movement is.
THE SOLUTION is to address the condition in the order your body reacts.
Typical symptom pattern or body reaction is:
1. Pain, Spasm and Inflammation.
2. Limited muscle and joint movement due to pain spasm and inflammation.
3. Weakness and deconditioning.
4. Recurring symptoms and multiple flare-ups.
I hurt so I don't move, I get weak and I hurt again, repeat.
Successful treatment (In the proper order)
1. Address pain spasm and inflammation WITH Ice, heat, massage, traction.
2. Improve joint and muscle motion WITH massage therapy and joint adjustments (Chiropractic), stretching.
3. Transition to stabilizing and strengthening the injured area.
4. Practice safe body mechanics, exercise, maintain flexibility and occasional chiropractic and massage appointments.
I feel better, I move better, I get stronger,i reduce the recurrence, I stay healthy.
This order of treatment makes the most sense, yields the best outcomes and leads to high patient satisfaction. At Tacoma Chiropractic Center we utilize massage therapy, traction, heat, ice and rehab exercises. When indicated we refer out to other medical specialties for injections and surgery. We also refer out for nerve testing, x-rays, MRI's and CT scans when medically appropriate.
