What Is the Active Release Technique and How Is It Performed?

In some cases, surface-level muscle tension is only the beginning of pain and suffering. Deep scar tissue is present, impacting the effectiveness of most treatment methods. This is where the Active Release Technique shines.

Active Release Technique or ART is a form of treatment designed to locate and treat scar tissue. Scar tissue typically forms when tissues are overused and cannot heal fully. Unfortunately, it can build up over time, deeper in the tissue than many methods can detect or reach.

ART involves your chiropractor examining the target area of the body specifically for scar tissue and adhesions along the fascia, muscles, ligaments, and tendons. Once located, your chiropractor will apply pressure to the area while either moving the surrounding area or having you move it.

For example, if adhesions or scar tissue is located in the shoulder, your chiropractor will apply pressure while the arm is being moved in specific ways. This combination of pressure and movement allows for deeper, more comprehensive treatment.
