Graston Technique

Your Guide to the Graston Technique

Tension is a common issue that causes pain and suffering around the world. When this tension is mild, stretches and light massages can often do the trick. However, when it’s severe, it seems that no amount of stretching can relieve it. So, what should you do? In addition to other soft tissue therapies, our team at Tacoma Chiropractic Center offers the Graston Technique. Learn more about tension and how the Graston Technique can help you below.

What’s Causing My Tension?

Tension is caused by many different things. Stress can cause tension to build up, as can poor posture, improper lifting techniques, car accidents, and more. However, surface-level tension can typically be addressed with little effort. Often, when you have tension that just doesn’t seem to go away, it’s actually not tension in the way you imagine it. Instead, it progresses into knots, which are much tougher to address. Other times, it’s scar tissue from a previous injury that never properly healed – and it’s often located deeper in the muscle tissues. When your pain and suffering come from knots or scar tissue, it not only becomes difficult to treat but can also be difficult to find. This is where the Graston Technique comes in.

What Is the Graston Technique?

The Graston Technique is a simple yet effective method of detecting and treating knots and scar tissue irritations that might be undetectable through other means. Your Tacoma chiropractor will pull a tool over the target area, which helps them “feel” for restrictions in the soft tissues. When one is located, the tool can be rubbed continuously across it to break it up.

The Benefits of the Graston Technique

• It promotes natural healing: When the restrictions are broken up, new tissues form naturally.

• It promotes faster healing: When a restriction is present, blood, oxygen, and other healing nutrients can’t reach the injured area properly. By breaking up those restrictions, nutrients can flow properly and speed up recovery.

• It complements other chiropractic methods: Though the Graston Technique is powerful on its own, combining it with other treatment methods can enhance the results.
